Summary: Se estudio la importancia relativa de 4 productos agricolas con los que trabaja el Centro Internacional de Agricultura Tropical (CIAT); los resultados se resumen en cuadros. En orden descendente; estos cultivos son frijol, maiz, arroz y yuca. Los paises tropicales producen el 97.4 por ciento del total mundial de yuca. Se cultiva principalmente en Africa y Sur America, y ocupa 1,5 por ciento de la superficie cultivable de los tropicos. La produccion de yuca ocupa el tercer lugar en importancia en el tropico (7,8 por ciento) despues de la cana de azucar (39.4 por ciento) y el arroz (31,2 por ciento). In descending order, these commodities are beans, maize, rice and cassava. Tropical countries produce 97.4 percent of the world's total cassava. It is grown mainly in Africa and South America, occupying 1.5 percent of the cultivable surface of the tropics. It ranks third (7.8 percent) in value of production in the tropics, as compared with sugarcane (39.4 percent) and rice (31.2 percent). (CIAT)
