Se presentan los resultados de una encuesta sobre produccion, mercadeo y consumo de habichuela realizada entre los participantes en el Taller de Mejoramiento de Habichuela realizado en CIAT (Colombia), provenientes de Argentina, Brasil, Peru, Ecuador, y Colombia. Aunque las areas sembradas de habichuela en estos paises no son muy extensas, el valor de la produccion es considerable. La aplicacion de fertilizantes, riego, herbicidas, fungicidas, e insecticidas es muy frecuente; el constante control quimico no solo es costoso sino que tambien resulta peligroso. En consecuencia, el mejoramiento genetico de la habichuela puede bajar los costos de produccion y aumentar la sanidad del cultivo. (CIAT)
Results from a survey on snap bean production, marketing, and consumption, carried out among the participants to the workshop on Snap Bean Improvement, held at CIAT (Colombia), coming from Argentina, Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, and Colombia, are presented. Although the area planted to snap beans in these countries is not that large, the production value is considerably high. The application of fertilizers, irrigation, herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides is rather frequent; constant chemical control is not only expensive but dangerous. Consequently, snap bean improvement can lower production costs and increase crop sanity. (CIAT)
