(RA-CIAT)
The conditions for induction and growth of somatic embryos in cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) were studied. Friable embryogenic calluses were induced from immature leaves when they were cultured in a modified Murashige and Skoog's medium containing high concentration of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D). Somatic embryos were observed when the calluses were transferred to a medium without 2,4-D or with low concentration of it. Somatic embryo induction was more efficient on the medium supplemented with 0.1 mg/l 2,4-D + 1 mg/l gibberelic acid (GA3), followed by 2 weeks of pre-culture on a medium containing 10 mg/l 2,4-D. The number of somatic embryos increased on the medium supplemented with 1 mg/l GA3, suggesting that gibberelic acid plays an important role in embryo induction and development in cassava. (AS)
