A survey of viruses affecting dry bean and cowpea in Lebanon - 3(2):76-80

Se realizo un reconocimiento de los virus que afectaban al frijol y al caupi en el Libano. Se recogieron 334 muestras con sintomas similares a los producidos por virus en 13 diferentes localidades durante la estacion de cultivo del otono de 1984. Las muestras se almacenaron a -20 grados C hasta que se examinaron mediante la prueba ELISA para detectar la presencia del virus de mosaico del caupi blackeye (BICMV), el BYMV, el BCMV y el virus de mosaico del pepino (CMV). En las pruebas preliminares, la extraccion tampon 0.1M fosfato + 0.1M EDTA, el pH 7.4, resultaron mucho mejores que el tampon de extraccion estandar y, en consecuencia, se empleo para la extraccion de virus de todas las muestras de campo. Los resultados obtenidos indicaron que alrededor de 50 por ciento de las muestras de frijol probadas estaban infectadas por BICMV. La incidencia de BCMV, BYMV y CMV en las muestras analizadas fue de 4.4 y 1.7 por ciento, resp. El BICMV se detecto en 10 localidades, mientras que BYMV, BCMV y CMV se encontraron en 1.4 y 4 localidades, resp. Se detectaron las infecciones mezcladas como BCMV, BICMV, BCMV + CMV, BYMV + CMV y BICMV + BCMV + CMV. En 35 por ciento de las muestras analizadas, no se identifico el virus causal. (RA-CIAT) A survey was conducted to identify viruses affecting dry bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) and cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) in Lebanon. Three hundred and thirty four samples exhibiting virus-like symptoms were collected from 13 different locations during the fall growing season of 1984. Samples were stored at -20 degrees C until they were tested by the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the presence of blackeye cowpea mosaic virus (BICMV), bean yellow mosaic virus (BYMV), bean common mosaic virus (BCMV) and cucumber mosaic virus (CMV). In preliminary tests, the extraction buffer 0.1M phosphate + O.1M EDTA, pH 7.4, was found to be far better than the standard extraction buffer and, accordingly, was used for virus extraction for all field samples. Results obtained indicated that around 50 percent of the bean samples tested were infected with BICMV. Incidence of BCMV, BYMV and CMV in the samples tested was 4,4 and 1.7 percent, respectively. BICMV was detected in 10 locations, whereas, BYMV, BCMV and CMV were found in 1,4 and 4 locations, respectively. Mixed infections such as BCMV, BICMV, BCMV + CMV, BYMV + CMV and BICMV + BCMV + CMV were detected. In 35 percent of the samples assayed, the causal virus was not identified. (AS)
