Puesto que el mercado interno del frijol seco en Uruguay esta practicamente saturado, se deberian reducir los costos de produccion y mejorar los patrones de calidad de acuerdo con los requerimientos del mercado. En base a los habitos de crecimiento y a los patrones de maduracion deseables para la cosecha mecanica, se evaluo el rendimiento y la resistencia a enfermedades en las siguientes variedades volubles y enanas (las primeras con habito de crecimiento determinado): Alubia, Balkanske Bile, Coco Blanc, Dnepropetrouskaja Bomba, Great Northern Emerson, G.N. Jules, G.N. Nebraska no. 1, G.N. Tara, G.N. U.I. 59 y G.N. 1140. Para cada una se determino el rendimiento y sus 3 componentes principales: vainas/planta, semillas/vaina y peso de 100 semillas. Se midieron otras caracteristicas tales como: ciclo vegetativo, promedio de altura, no. de entrenudos/planta y no. de nudos a las primeras flores. Los resultados preliminares indicaron que las variedades G.N. Nebraska no. 1, Dnpropetrouskaja Bomba y Alubia, fueron las de mejor rendimiento; sin embargo, las 2 ultimas fueron altamente susceptibles al anublo de halo. Aunque las variedades G.N. Jules, Emerson y Tara tuvieron un rendimiento promedio, fueron de maduracion temprana, altamente resistentes y recias, y por esta razon, probablemente puedan rendir aceptablemente bajo condiciones adversas. La variedad Balkanske Bile fue altamente susceptible al virus del mosaico comun, lo mismo que la variedad Coco Blanc; esta ultima, fue tambien de bajo rendimiento y tuvo un alto porcentaje de resquebrajamiento de las testas de la semilla. Ninguna de estas 2 variedades sera probada de nuevo. (CIAT) |

Since the domestic market for dry beans in Uruguay is practically saturated, production costs should be lowered and quality standards improved in accordance with market requirements. Based on growth habits and maturity patterns desirable for mechanical harvesting, the following dwarf and bush varieties (the latter with determinate growth habits) were evaluated for yield and disease resistance: Alubia, Balkanske Bile, Coco Blanc, Dnepropetrouskaja Bomba, Great Northern Emerson, G.N. Jules, G.N. Nebraska no. 1, G.N. Tara, G.N. U.I. 59 and G.N. 1140. Yield and its 3 main componentes (pods/plant, seeds/pod, wt 100 seeds) were determined for each. Other plant characteristics measured were plant growth cycle, av height, no. of internodes/plant and no. of nodes to 1st flowers. Preliminary results indicated that G.N. Nebraska no. 1. Dnepropetrouskaja Bomba and Alubia were the best yielders; however, the last 2 were highly susceptible to halo blight. Although G.N. Jules, Emerson and Tara were only av yielders, they were early-maturing, highly resistant, vigorous varieties and would therefore probably yield well under adverse conditions. Balkanske Bile was highly susceptible to bean common mosaic virus as was Coco Blanc; the latter was also low yielding and had a large percentage of cracked seed coats.
