La leguminosa arborea Leucaena leucocephala es un forraje de alta calidad para el ganado en muchos paises tropicales. Durante los ultimos 30 anos, los ganaderos se han abstenido de sembrarla a pesar de la evidencia conclusiva obtenida en pequenos expt. de pastoreo acerca de que esta leguminosa mejora la produccion de carne y se adapta a una extensa area del norte de Australia. En la decada de 1960 se disponia de semilla de 4 cv. En 1968 se sembro el cv. Peru, un excelente tipo forrajero para la produccion de semilla, en un bloque de 24 ha. Poca de esta semilla se utilizo en Australia. Leucaena no se adopto debido probablemente a la publicidad adversa sobre los efectos extremos de la toxicidad causada por la mimosina, la limitada adaptacion ecologica y los problemas de establecimiento. De otra parte, el pastoreo rotacional en ciclos cortos, recomendado por los investigadores para las hileras limitantes de Leucaena, entro en conflicto directo con el manejo continuo del pastoreo, tradicional en praderas naturales y mejoradas.
