520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
(CIAT)

520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc The diffusion and adoption of root crop technology in the Philippines was studied; the methodology used and preliminary results are presented. Total sample size was 240 farmers of the provinces of Leyte, Southern Leyte, Bohol, Laguna, and Bicol. The performance of indigenous and improved var. of cassava and sweet potatoes was compared, noting farmers' technology adoption patterns. Although most of the farm activities are carried out by male members of the family, other members such as children and women also participate. Of 27 cassava producers, 70 percent indicated that planting materials were secured by the husbands, 52 percent by the wives, and 59 percent by the children. Land preparation in cassava plantings is performed most of the time by men as stated by 78 percent of the producers interviewed. Women are also involved in weeding, pest control, fertilizer application, harvesting, and marketing, with a high involvement in processing, considered as a source of income. Marketing activities and decisions related to marketing of farm produce are usually made by wives. Preliminary results indicate that women assume greater roles than men in processing and marketing root crops, an important implication for the selection of priority clientele of training programs. In the future, extension efforts should be geared more to women instead of purely men. (CIAT)
