Durante 1984 se realizaron evaluaciones por resistencia a Empoasca kraemeri, Apion godmani y gorgojos que infestan la semilla. Tambien se evaluaron algunas accesiones de frijol por su reaccion a la babosa Vaginulus plebeius. Algunas selecciones de semilla blanca y roja de los cruzamientos por resistencia a E. kraemeri alcanzaron niveles de rendimientos similares a los de mejores lineas negras en condiciones del ataque de la plaga; las lineas mulatinho han mostrado los mayores niveles de resistencia. El mejoramiento por resistencia a Apion godmani se esta realizando en estrecha colaboracion entre los programas nacionales de frijol en America Central; se han desarrollado las lineas APN que son bien adaptadas y muestran altos niveles de resistencia. El mejoramiento por resistencia a los gorgojos que infestan la semilla (Acanthoscelides obtectus y Zabrotes subfasciatus) incluyo las selecciones F3 de cruzamientos adicionales entre tipos de frijol comercial y fuentes de resistencia silvestres de Phaseolus vulgaris. En relacion con la babosa V. plebeius, CIAT ha comprometido algunos recursos para la evaluacion de germoplasma por resistencia a esta plaga y la busqueda de enemigos naturales. En un estudio de comportamiento con plantas enteras infestadas con 2 babosas/planta durante 24 h en el invernadero, se encontraron diferencias significativas en el consumo de follaje de frijol entre las accesiones de P. vulgaris y otras especies de plantas. During 1984 evaluations for resistance to Empoasca kraemeri, Apion godmani, and seed-infesting bruchids were continued. Some bean accessions were also evaluated for their reaction to the slug Vaginulus plebeius. Several red-and white-seeded selections from crosses for resistance to E. kraemeri reached yield levels near the best black lines under pest attack; mulatinho lines have shown the highest levels of resistance. Breeding for resistance to Apion godmani is being conducted in close collaboration with national bean programs in Central America; APN lines have been developed which are well adapted and show high levels of resistance. Breeding for resistance to seed-infesting bruchids (Acanthoscelides obtectus and Zabrotes subfasciatus) involved F3 selections from additional crosses between commercial bean types and wild Phaseolus vulgaris sources of resistance. Concerning the slug V. plebeius, CIAT has commited resources for the evaluation of germplasm for resistance to this pest and the search for natural enemies. In one test performed with whole plants infested with 2 slugs/plant for 24 h in the glasshouse, significant differences were found in consumption of bean foliage among accessions of P. vulgaris and other plant species.
