Summary, etc Se tratan diferentes aspectos de las asociaciones de cultivos mas importantes, con enfasis en los cultivos multiples de leguminosas con cereales (siendo frijol/maiz la mas comun): caracteristicas de la planta, diferencias en maduracion, arquitectura de la planta, manejo de enfermedades y plagas, manejo de la densidad y del arreglo espacial, fertilizacion, fechas de siembra relativas y control de malezas. En relacion con los cultivos multiples de raices con leguminosas, figuran algunas observaciones sobre las asociaciones yuca/frijol y batata dulce/frijol. Se mencionan ejemplos practicos y resultados obtenidos de la investigacion en cultivos multiples y la investigacion a nivel de finca. Se concluye que el mejoramiento por seleccion se puede llevar a cabo no solo en monocultivos sino en sistemas de cultivos multiples y que entre mayor sea la diversidad de los cultivos multiples, menor sera la probabilidad de que ocurran perdidas en la cosecha. Finalmente, se espera lograr avances mediante el involucramiento creciente de los agricultores para desarrollar y adaptar nuevas tecnologias. (CIAT)

Summary, etc Different aspects of the most important crop associations are given, with emphasis on multiple cropping of legumes with cereals (the most common being beans/maize): plant characteristics, maturity differences, plant architecture, management of pests and diseases, management of density and spatial arrangement, fertilization, relative planting dates, and weed control. Regarding multiple cropping of root crops with cereals, observations are made on cassava/beans and sweet potato/beans. Practical examples and results of multiple cropping research and on-farm research are mentioned. It is concluded that breeding for selection can be efficiently carried out not only in sole cropping but in multiple cropping systems and that the greater the diversity of multiple cropping, the less likely that crop loss will occur. Finally, future advances are expected to be achieved by an increasing involvement with farmers to develop and adapt new technologies. (CIAT)
