La red internacional para la investigacion en frijol, compuesta por los cientificos del Programa de Frijol de CIAT y por los colaboradores de los programas nacionales, se reune cada 3 anos para hacer un balance de sus actividades. En su quinta reunion, ademas de analizar las operaciones tradicionales de evaluacion y distribucion de germoplasma, se discutieron trabajos sobre tecnologia de produccion como complemento a los trabajos en mejoramiento var. y para desarrollar una accion conjunta de progreso en el cultivo. El documento contiene 5 capitulos que resumen los trabajos presentados por los investigadores en las areas de 1) evaluacion y diseminacion de nuevo germoplasma de frijol mediante una red de investigacion; 2) resultados obtenidos con el nuevo germoplasma en Bulgaria, Africa y Asia Occidental; 3) resultados obtenidos con el nuevo germoplasma en America Latina; 4) tecnicas novedosas para generar germoplasma y 5) tecnologia de produccion para complementar el mejoramiento var. The international network for research on beans, conformed by the scientists of CIAT's Bean Program and by the collaborators of the national programs, meets every 3 yr. to evaluate its activities. In its 5th meeting, besides analizing traditional functions such as germplasm evaluation and distribution, work on production technology as a complement to var. breeding was discussed, which is expected to help develop a joint action leading to progress of the crop. The document contains 5 chapters that summarize the work presented by the researchers on (1) new bean germplasm evaluation and dissemination through a research network; (2) results obtained with new germplasm in Bulgaria, Africa, and Western Asia; (3) results obtained with new germplasm in Latin America; (4) new techniques to generate germplasm; and (5) production technology to supplement var. breeding.
