Se proponen metas globales factibles para el mejoramiento genetico de yuca en Asia con base en los actuales programas nacionales de mejoramiento genetico de yuca, los logros y la demanda de yuca en los siguientes paises asiaticos: Tailandia, Filipinas, China, Malaysia, Indonesia, India y Vietnam. Se menciona el germoplasma del CIAT que ha sido seleccionado en paises asiaticos por caracteristicas sobresalientes (p. ej., CM 305-13, CM 407-7, hibridos de M Col 1684, M Col 1468 y M Bra 12). Si el nivel actual de productividad no se mejora significativamente, la demanda de yuca en Asia no aumentara; por otra parte, la demanda sera ilimitada si se puede lograr un mejoramiento significativo en la productividad y la yuca puede competir con maiz, sorgo y cana de azucar. Se pueden establecer 3 niveles de metas de seleccion: en el primero, la investigacion se justifica basada en la importancia de la yuca pero no se han definido los objetivos y metas del mejoramiento genetico; en el segundo, las metas de investigacion senalan el rendimiento, el contenido de MS y la resistencia a las principales enfermedades y plagas como los objetivos primarios del mejoramiento genetico (30-50 por ciento de aumento en rendimiento en las estaciones exptl. y 20-30 por ciento de aumento en los campos de produccion); y en el tercero, las metas de investigacion consideran altos incrementos en el rendimiento para permitirle a la yuca competir favorablemente con otros cultivos como fuente energetica (100 por ciento de aumento, o sea 50 t/ha, en estaciones exptl. y 50 por ciento de aumento, o sea 25 t/ha, en campos de produccion). Feasible overall goals for cassava breeding in Asia are proposed on the basis of current national cassava breeding programs, achievements, and cassava demand in the following Asian Countries: Thailand, Philippines, China, Malaysia, Indonesia, India, and Vietnam. CIAT germplasm that has been selected in Asian countries for outstanding traits is mentioned, among which are CM 305-13, CM 407-7, M Col 1684 hybrids, M Col 1468, and M Bra 12. If the current level of productivity is not significantly increased, the demand for cassava in Asia will not increase; on the other hand, demand will be unrestricted if a major improvement in productivity can be made and cassava can compete with maize, sorghum, and sugarcane. Three levels of research selection goals can be set: in the 1st, research is justified based on the importance of cassava but breeding objectives and goals are not defined, in the 2nd, research goals specify yield, DM content, and resistance to major diseases and pests as primary breeding objectives (30-50 percent yield increase in exptl. stations and 20- 30 percent increase in production fields); and in the 3rd, research goals consider high yield increases to allow cassava to compete favorably with other crops as an energy source (100 percent yield increase, or 50 t/ha, in exptl. stations and 50 percent yield increase, or 25 t/ha, in production fields).
