Se informa sobre la operacion en el primer ano (1983-84) de 6 plantas de secado natural de yuca, establecidas en algunos departamentos de la Costa Atlantica de Colombia como resultado de la operacion exitosa de la planta piloto establecida en Betulia (Sucre) en 1981. En las condiciones actuales de produccion y comercializacion, el proceso de secado natural de la yuca demostro ser una actividad economicamente rentable en la region. Sin embargo, fue sensible al precio de las raices frescas y al grado de ocupacion de la planta de secado. El principal factor limitativo del aumento de los rendimientos de yuca es la falta de programas para producir semilla sana. En las pruebas regionales, las var. CM 681-2, M Col 22 y M Col 1505 presentaron un comportamiento similar o superior al de la var. local Venezolana. Estudios realizados sobre produccion y mercadeo agricola en la region indicaron que existen condiciones adecuadas para la agroindustrializacion de la yuca, especialmente por el estancamiento de la produccion de cereales de grano destinados a la industria de concentrados para animales y, por otra parte, por la menor demanda de raices frescas. En el segundo semestre de 1984 se estableceran nuevas plantas de secamiento (3 en Cordoba, 2 en Sucre, 1 en Bolivar, 2 en Atlantico, 2 en Magdalena y 1 en Cesar). (CIAT) |

The 1st yr of operation (1983-84) of 6 cassava natural drying plants, established in some states of the Colombian Atlantic Coast as a result of the successful operation of the Betulia pilot plant (Sucre) established in 1981, is reported. Under the present production and commercialization conditions, the natural drying process of cassava proved to be an economically profitable activity in the region; however, it was sensitive to fresh root price and the degree of drying plant occupation. The major constraint to increased cassava yields is the lack of programs to produce healthy seed. In regional trials, var. CM 681-2, M Col 22, and M Col 1505 performed similarly or superior to the local var. Venezolana. Studies conducted on agricultural production and marketing in the region indicated that adequate conditions exist for cassava agroindustrialization, especially because of the stagnation of cereal grain production for the animal feed industry and, on the other hand, the reduced demand of fresh roots. Ten new drying plants (3 in Cordoba, 2 in Sucre, 1 in Bolivar, 2 in Atlantico, 2 in Magdalena, and 1 in Cesar) will be established in the second semester of 1984. (CIAT) |
