Se describen las actividades del CIAT en el desarrollo de aplicaciones de biotecnologia al cultivo de la yuca en la ultima decada. Se enfatizan las estrategias para identificar temas de investigacion e implementar las capacidades internas y el esfuerzo cooperativo internacional en biotecnologia de yuca. Se destaca la integracion exitosa de biotecnicas selectas en la investigacion sobre conservacion, caracterizacion y propagacion de germoplasma de yuca en CIAT y programas nacionales en paises en desarrollo, ademas de los avances en el desarrollo de herramientas avanzadas de biotecnologia para la elaboracion de mapas geneticas y manipulacion genetica en CIAT. Los esfuerzos del CIAT se orientan hacia el establecimiento de vinculos entre la investigacion biologica moderna y los agricultores de yuca a traves de la generacion de tecnologias a base de germoplasma, ambientalmente inofensivas y de bajos insumos. CIAT activities in developing biotechnology applications to cassava in the last decade are described. The strategies to identify research topics and implement in house capabilities and an international cooperative effort in cassava biotechnology are emphasized. Successful integration of selected biotechniques into the research on cassava germplasm conservation, characterization, and propagation at CIAT and national programs in developing countries is highlighted, and progress in developing advanced biotechnology tools for genetic mapping and manipulation at CIAT is presented. The CIAT efforts are oriented to link modern biological research with the needs of cassava farmers through the generation of low input, environmentally friendly, germplasm-based technologies. (AS) |
