Summary, etc	Las sabanas tropicales abarcan casi 25 millones de ha de llanos de tierras bajas en el este de Colombia los cuales se caracterizan por poseer latosoles muy acidos (pH 4,2-4,5, altamente saturados de Al) con bajo contenido de P, K, S, Ca, y Mg. La precipitacion esta entre 1500 y 2000 mm/ano, con una estacion seca muy severa de mas de 3 meses. La temp promedio anual es de 27 grados centigrados. Las sabanas estan dominadas por Trachypogon, Andropogon y Paspalum spp. En un ensayo de pastoreo que se comenzo en la sabana nativa, en 1971, las ganacias de peso vivo (GPV) de los animales fluctuaron de 146 a casi 600 g/cabeza/dia durante la estacion lluviosa de 8 meses mientras que durante la estacion seca se registraron perdidas de 150 hasta mas de 500 g/cabeza/dia. La produccion anual total fue del orden de los 32 kg de GPV/ha. Las mayores tasas de carga de 5 a 2 ha/animal, produjeron una disminucion en la ganancia por animal; la GPV/ha fue superior a la tasa de carga de 3 ha/animal. Un sistema de pastoreo rotacional de 4 potreros no mejoro los resultados con ninguna tasa de carga. Melinis minutiflora e Hyparrhenia rufa son las principales especies introducidas y su uso
