Summary, etc	Una de las enfermedaes mas serias y ampliamente diseminadas en las areas donde se cultiva la yuca en Africa es AMD, la cual causa reducciones en el rendimiento hasta de un 90 por ciento. Se revisa la investigacion temprana en el mejoramiento de yuca por resistencia a AMD en Africa. En relacion con la seleccion por resistencia a AMD, se discuten los cambios en el tamano de la poblacion y en la actividad de la mosca blanca (Bemisia tabaci), vector del AMD, en relacion con los cambios en las condiciones ambientales, tales como la cantidad y distribucion de las lluvias, intensidad de la temp. y la luz. Durante los ultimos 8 anos se ha hecho un progreso significativo en el International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA). La resistencia a AMD ha sido incorporada con buenos resultados en cv. de altos rendimientos de calidad aceptable. Se ha evaluado el material resistente a AMD y se han seleccionado algunos clones promisorios en varios paises en Africa Tropical y en la India. En estos paises ha sido efectiva la resistencia. Summary, etc	CAMD is one of the most serious and widespread diseases throughout cassava-growing areas in Africa, causing yield reductions of up to 90 percent. Early research on breeding of cassava for resistance to CAMD in Africa is reviewed. Changes in population size and in activity of the whitefly vector of CAMD (Bemisia tabaci) in relation to changes in environmental conditions such as the amount and distribution of rainfall, light intensity and temp. are discussed in relation to screening for resistance to CAMD. Over the past 8 yr, significant progress has been made at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA). Resistance to CAMD has been successfully incorporated into high- yielding cv. of acceptable quality. The CAMD-resistant material has been evaluated and many promising clones have been selected in various countries in tropical Africa and India. The resistance has been effective in those countries.
