Se evaluaron con exito las diferencias de fijacion de N2 por cv. de frijol en el campo mediante la tecnica de dilucion isotopica de N15 con un cultivo indicador no fijador de distinta especie (trigo). Hubiera sido posible clasificar los cv. de Phaseolus en forma similar segun su capacidad de fijacion de N2, con base en el rendimiento de semilla o en el rendimiento total de N, pero el metodo isotopico proporciono una forma de medir directamente la fijacion de N2 e hizo posible estimar la proporcion de N fijado a N total en el cultivo y en partes de la planta. Las cantidades de N fijado variaron entre 24.59 kg de N/ha en el cv. Goiano precoce (de 60 dias) hasta 64.91 kg de N/ha en el cv. Carioca (de 90 dias). El porcentaje de N en la planta debido a la fijacion fue de 57-68 por ciento para el cv. de 90 dias y de 37 por ciento para Goiano precoce de 60 dias. La utilizacion de fertilizante fue de 17-30 por ciento de una aplicacion de 20 kg de fertilizante N/ha. La aplicacion de 100 kg de N/ha disminuyo la fijacion de N2 sin suprimirla del todo. Aparentemente las diferencias en el rendimiento entre el cv. Carioca, de mayor rendimiento, y el cv. Moruna, de menor rendimiento (ambos de 90 dias), se debieron a diferencias var. en la eficiencia de conversion del N a materia economica (semilla), asi como tambien a diferencias en la capacidad de los genotipos para la fijacion del N2. Differences in N2-fixation by bean cv. were successfully evaluated in the field using (15)N isotope dilution technique with a nonfixing test crop of a different species (wheat). Phaseolus cv. could have been similarly ranked for N2-fixation capacity from either seed yield or total N yield, but the isotope method provided a direct measure of N2-fixation and made it possible to estimate the proportion of fixed to total N in the crop and in plant parts. Amounts of N fixed varied between 24.59 kg N/ha for the 60-day cv. Goiano precoce to 64.91 kg N/ha for the 90-day cv. Carioca. The percentage of plant N due to fixation was 57-68 percent for the 90-day cv. and 37 percent for Goiano precoce (60- day cv.). Fertilizer utilization was 17-30 percent of a 20 kg N/ha fertilizer application. An application of 100 kg N/ha decreased N2- fixation without suppressing it totally. Differences in yield between the highest yielding 90-day cv. (Carioca) and the lowest (Moruna) were also due apparently to var. differences in efficiency of conversion of N to economic matter (seed), as well as to differences in capacity of genotypes for N2-fixation.
