Summary, etc Se iluminaron foliolos adheridos de Phaseolus vulgaris a 1200 micromoles/metro cuadrado/seg durante 3 h en una atmosfera sin CO2 y con un bajo nivel de O2 (99 por ciento de N2 y 1 por ciento de O2). Este tratamiento dio como resultado una perdida reversible del 50-60 por ciento de la actividad fotosintetica cuando se reintrodujeron los foliolos al aire normal (fotoinhibicion de la tasa de asimilacion de CO2). Los contenidos de los productos intermedios de la fotosintesis y especialmente de los del grupo fosfoglicerato fueron inferiores que en los foliolos testigo; sin embargo, la relacion de fosfoglicerato:bifosfato de ribulosa continuo siendo menor en los foliolos tratados en comparacion con los testigos sometidos a una irradiacion alta durante un periodo corto de iluminacion. Expt. de deteccion de impulso intermitente con (14)CO2, llevados a cabo en condiciones de equilibrio dinamico de la fotosintesis, mostraron que el flujo de C a traves de los productos intermedios del ciclo Benson-Calvin se disminuia correspondientemente en los foliolos fotoinhibidos, mientras que la renovacion de fosfogliceratos no parecia verse afectada por el tratamiento. La capacidad de regeneracion del bifosfato de ribulosa parecio ser el principal factor limitativo involucrado en la fotoinhibicion de la asimilacion de C. Coincidio con la observacion de que el transporte de electrones a traves del FSII queda inhibido en hojas fotoinhibidas. Ademas, la acumulacion de bifosfato de ribulosa tambien evidente en hojas sometidas a iluminacion prolongada podria deberse a alguna limitacion de la actividad de la ribulosa bifosfato carboxilasa oxigenasa. Summary, etc Attached leaflets of Phaseolus vulgaris were illuminated at 1200 micromol/square meter/s for 3 h in an atm. devoid of CO2 and with low O2 (99 percent N2 and 1 percent O2). This treatment resulted in a reversible 50-60 percent loss of photosynthetic activity when leaflets were reintroduced into normal air (photoinhibition of CO2 assimilation rate). Photosynthetic intermediates and especially phosphoglycerate pool sizes were lower than in the control leaflets; however, the ratio phosphoglycerate:ribulose bisphosphate remained lower in treated leaflets than in the control submitted to a short illumination at high irradiance. (14)CO2 pulse-chase expt., performed at steady state photosynthesis, showed that the flow of C through intermediates of the Benson-Calvin cycle was correspondingly decreased in photoinhibited leaflets while phosphoglycerate turnover did not appear to be affected by treatment. The capacity for ribulose bisphosphate regeneration appeared to be the main limiting factor involved in photoinhibition of C assimilation. It was consistent with the observation that electron transport through PSII was inhibited in photoinhibited leaves. In addition, ribulose bisphosphate accumulation also in evidence in leaves submitted to prolonged illumination could be due to some limitation of ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase oxygenase activity.
