Se describe un modelo matematico que simula la produccion de carne en los Llanos Orientales de Colombia, donde se practican sistemas de produccion de ganado extensivos. El modelo funciona alrededor del flujo de energia consumida por el animal, y puede ser utilizado para simular numerosas estrategias de manejo, tales como la monta controlada, introduccion de pasturas mejoradas, criterios de descarte de animales y ordeno de vacas, entre otros. El modelo es altamente sensible a cambios en el valor nutritivo de los recursos forrajeros simulados; sin embargo, el modelo sugiere que la disponibilidad de forraje no es un factor limitativo. Los resultados simulados del efecto de la introduccion de pasturas mejoradas de valor nutritivo moderado mostraron aumentos significativos en la produccion animal. No obstante, las practicas de manejo intensivas, como la monta de corta duracion, no son factibles; sin embargo, una estacion de monta que evite el mantenimiento de vacas lactantes durante la epoca seca seria benefica en terminos de desempeno del sistema. El ordeno de las vacas durante la epoca lluviosa es factible biologica y economicamente en sistemas que incorporan pasturas mejoradas. (RA- CIAT) |

A brief description is given of a mathematical model that simulates beef production in the eastern savannas of Colombia where extensive cattle production systems are practiced. The model is energy-driven and can be used to simulate numerous management strategies such as controlled mating, introduction of sown pastures, culling criteria, milking of cows, and others. The model is highly sensitive to changes in the nutritional value of the forage resources simulated. However, the model suggests that forage availability is seldom a limiting factor. Simulated results on the effect of introducing sown pastures of moderate nutritional value show significant increases of animal yields. Even so, management-intensive practices such as short duration matings are not feasible. However, a mating season that avoids maintaining suckling cows during the dry season would be beneficial in terms of system performance. Milking of cows during the wet season is biologically and economically feasible in systems that incorporate sown pastures. |
