Se presentan los resultados de expt. preliminares realizados con un modelo de simulacion de la produccion de carne en los Llanos Orientales de Colombia. Se examinan las consecuencias energeticas de los diferentes usos de las pasturas sembradas con referencia a su factibilidad biologica a largo plazo. La calidad de las mezclas graminea-leguminosa actualmente evaluada en CIAT es tal que la disponibilidad de energia en los sistemas extensivos de produccion animal es un factor limitante durante la estacion seca, tal como sucede en los tradicionales sistemas de produccion de sabana. Se identifican un no. de opciones las cuales parecen aliviar esta limitante. Los sistemas de doble proposito de produccion de carne y leche basados en el uso de pasturas sembradas son viables y productivos gracias al aumento en la disponibilidad de energia en la estacion humeda.
