The most important areas of the state of Bahia, Brazil, were selected to establish cassava alcohol distilleries. Within these areas important centers for alcohol production were determined on the basis of their potential in terms of climate, soils, crop production, area planted, and in some cases, exptl. results of research indicating the adaptation of cassava to the region. The areas selected were Reconcavo Baiano, Feira de Santana, Jequie, Andarai, Senhor do Bonfim, Caitite, Brumado, and Mascote. In the Sao Francisco River region the areas of Barreiras y Angical were selected. For each one of the centers where a distillery can be established the following information is given: municipalities included, geographic localization, physiography, climate, type of vegetation and soil, major crops established, and soil potential for cassava cultivation. It is also indicated that the soils of this region have low fertility; a fertility index for the soils of each one of the potential centers is included. (CIAT) eng
