Summary: Se definen diferentes sistemas de cultivo de la yuca, con especial referencia a los sistemas de cultivo intercalado en Brasil (yuca/frijol, yuca/maiz, yuca/maiz/frijol, yuca/arroz, yuca/cultivos perennes). Se enumeran tanto las ventajas como las desventajas del cultivo intercalado. Tambien se indican los factores fisiologicos (competencia por luz, agua y nutrimentos, dioxido de carbono), geneticos (precocidad, insensibilidad al fotoperiodo, porte erecto, ramificacion alta, respuesta a altas densidades de plantas, resistencia a la sequia), agronomicos (epoca y densidad de siembra, arreglo espacial) y fitosanitarios (enfermedades, plagas, malezas) que inciden en este sistema de cultivo. Se mencionan factores economicos que afectan el cultivo intercalado. Entre las tecnologias mejoradas esta la siembra en hileras sencillas y en hileras dobles. Se indica como se estiman la eficiencia del uso de la tierra para sistemas de cultivos intercalados, la productividad de energia (calorias)/ha, la tasa de retorno a capital y la rentabilidad.
