(CIAT) spa
Expt. were conducted under greenhouse, field, and growth chamber conditions to study the effect of Mg on the yield and growth measurements of snap beans. Deficiency symptoms include interveinal chlorosis, brownish spots, stunted growth, and premature defoliation, which probably reduce plant photosynthetic activity. Retarded flowering and stubbier root development also occurred under Mg stress. For good plant growth and yield in a nutrient solution, 48 ppm of Mg were required; a depressive effect was observed at 144 ppm. In the field, only pod growth was affected significantly; limiting factors may have been level and method of application. In growth chambers high moisture increased P, Ca, B, Sr, and Mg; K, N, Mn, and Fe decreased. Mg treatments affected K, Mg, and Al content significantly under dry conditions but only Mg under wet conditions. Seed Mg is required for initial plant growth. In nutrient solution, significant variation results from the antagonistic effect of Mg with K, Fe, B, Al, and Zn and a synergistic effect with Ca and Sr. Significant var. differences were found; Harvester Corneli 14 and Tenderette were the best. Mg deficiency is not a simple relationship between Mg, moisture, and var. but must involve other factors. (CIAT) eng
