Para las regiones del tropico humedo sin estacion seca con precipitacion total anual superior a 4000 mm/ano, se presenta el sistema de produccion de maiz-yuca de pequenos agricultores en la zona Atlantica de Costa Rica. Se detalla la secuencia de actividades de sistema: una vez ocurrida la floracion del maiz (marzoabril o sept.-oct.), la yuca se intercala a 1.0 x 1.0 m (10,000 plantas/ha) entre las plantas de maiz sembradas a 0.5 x 1.0 m (40,000 plantas/ha). Las ventajas de este sistema de produccion de cultivos en relevo incluyen una mayor DAF, una preparacion del suelo comun para ambos cultivos, reduccion en el incremento de la biomasa de malezas y una sola fertilizacion para el maiz, dejando el fertilizante residual a la yuca. Los agricultores obtienen en prom. 2 t de maiz y 30 t de yuca/ha. (CIAT)Summary: The broad production range of annual crops existing among small farmers in the Central American Isthmus is analyzed, using rainfall as the determinant variable and with examples organized according to rainfall pattern in: (1) humid tropics-without dry season, with lightly pronounced dry season, and with marked dry season, and (2) dry humid tropics-lightly pronounced interestival dog days and pronounced interestival dog days (1500 and less than 1000 mm total annual rainfall). For humid tropical regions with no dry season and with total annual rainfall over 4000 mm/yr, the maize-cassava production system of small farmers in the Atlantic zone of Costa Rica is presented. The sequence of activities of the system is detailed; once maize has flowered (March-April or Sept.-Oct.), cassava is intercropped at 1.0 x 1.0 m (10,000 plants/ha) between maize plants planted at 0.5 x 1.0 m (40,000 plants/ha). Advantages of this relay crop production system include a longer lad, soil preparation common to both crops, reduction in weed biomass increase, and only one fertilization for maize, leaving the residual fertilizer for cassava. Farmers obtain an av. of 2 t maizeand 30 t cassava/ha. (CIAT)
