Se destaca la importancia de la yuca como cultivo alimenticio en Africa y se tratan los principales problemas de produccion en el area. Se establecen los objetivos de mejoramiento de yuca en el Programa de Mejoramiento de Raices y Tuberculos del International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA). Se revisan algunas consideraciones basicas sobre el mejoramiento de la yuca. The importance of cassava as a food crop in Africa is stated, and major problems involved in production in the area are briefly discussed. The cassava breeding objectives in the Root and Tuber Improvement Program of the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) are laid down.
