Biological nitrogen fixation in Africa: ProceedingsSummary: The activities and achievements of the Agricultural Research Centre (Egypt) in the areas of biological N fixation research and application are discussed. A research program has been adopted that aims at improving soil fertility by providing high quality biofertilizers as legume inoculants, blue-green algae inoculants and Azolla for rice fields, Azospirillum inoculants for cereals, and Mycorrhiza for improving uptake of soil P. Biofertilizers being used in Egypt include (a) preparations containing Rhizobium spp. to be applied as legume inoculants; (b) preparations containing N fixing blue-green algae to be applied in paddies; (c) Azolla plants to be used as green manure for rice and for feed. Associative N- fixing organisms are still under evaluation.
