Summary: Se describe la situacion del cultivo de la yuca en el Brasil. Entre los principales problemas del cultivo se encuentran los socioeconomicos tales como la comercializacion y la adopcion de tecnologias mejoradas. La produccion media nacional es de 12.6 t/ha en tanto que en condiciones exptl. se logran 22-28 t/ha y con el empleo de modernos insumos, especialmente fertilizacion, se alcanzan producciones de 30-42 t/ha en un ciclo de 12 meses. Se senalan las principales entidades que participan en la investigacion con yuca en colaboracion con el Centro Nacional de Pesquisa de Mandioca e Fruticultura, el cual, como entidad coordinadora, realiza expt. en diferentes regiones del pais. Se realizan estudios de control biologico del gusano cachon, Erinnyis ello, y acaros de los generos Mononychellus y Tetranychus, y el chinche de encaje, Vatiga illudens; tambien se estudia la fisiologia del cultivo y practicas de manejo que puedan beneficiar al agricultor. Se considera que el potencial del cultivo es grande, ya que existen tierras aptas para el cultivo, buena demanda para su consumo y posibilidades para su utilizacion en la produccion de alcohol y en la alimentacion de ganado. Se senalan las prioridades de investigacion para el cultivo en las areas de genetica y mejoramiento, ecofisiologia, suelos y nutricion, fitopatologia, entomologia, tecnologia y economia. Among the main problems of the crop are the socioeconomic ones, such as commercialization and the adoption of improved technology. The av. national production is 12.6 t/ha while av. exptl. yields range between 22-28 t/ha and with the use of modern inputs, especially fertilizers, productions of 30-42 t/ha can be obtained in a 12-mo. period. The principal institutions participating in cassava research in collaboration with the Centro Nacional de Pesquisa de Mandioca e Fruticultura, responsible for coordinating the expt. in the different regions of the country, are indicated. Biological control studies of the cassava hornworm, Erinnyis ello, the mites Mononychellus and Tetranychus, and the lace bug, Vatiga illudens, are conducted; crop physiology is also studied as well as management practices that can benefit the farmer. The crop is considered to have great potential in Brazil as there are adequate lands for its cultivation, considerable demand for consumption, and possibilities for its use in alcohol production and animal feed industries. Research priorities are indicated in genetics andimprovement, ecophysiology, soils and nutrition, plant pathology, entomology, technology, and economics. (CIAT)
