Se hace una analisis descriptivo de las caracteristicas agroeconomicas del cultivo de yuca en el Ecuador, con el fin de obtener informacion util para la asignacion de recuros en investigacion, extension y produccion. Se presenta informacion sobre el tamano de las fincas, tipos de cultivo, superficie sembrada de yuca, caracteristicas quimicas de los suelos, variedades y sistemas de siembra preferidos por los agricultores de las 3 zonas estudiadas (Minabi, Pichincha y Los Rios). Se presentan los centros de mercadeo, precios y usos del producto. Finalmente, se hace un analisis del aspecto economico: rendimientos, costos, ganancias y beneficios relativos de cada sistema de siembra. La mayoria de los agricultores son pequenos y no aplican tecnicas adecuadas. A descriptive analysis is made of the agro-economic aspects of cassava cultivation in Ecuador as a basis for allocating resources for research, extension and production. Data are given on farm size, types of crops grown, area planted to cassava, soil types, varieties and plainting systems preferred by 104 farmers in the 3 zones studied (Manabi, Pichincha and Los Rios). Marketing centers, prices and product uses are dealt with. Finally, an analysis is made of the economic aspects such as yields, costs, profits and relative profitability of the different plainting systems. Most cassava growers are small and do not apply adequate technology. The study of yield-limiting factors, the demand for fresh cassava and low-cost technological changes is recommended. (CIAT) eng
