Summary: The influence of different components of soil acidity on development of dry bean var. Goiano Precoce was studied in the greenhouse. Treatments consisted of partial and total correction of exchangeable soil acidity and of bringing the pH to 6.5, each in the presence or absence of NPK fertilization. Soil acidity affected development as well as initiation of flowering, inhibiting the process when acidity was associated with nutrient availability. Goiano Precoce was highly sensitive to acidity and nutrient deficiency, making it necessary to raise the pH close to 6.5, rather than merely neutralizing the exchangeable Al(3+), for better growth and DM production. For the type of soil studied, fertilizers containing Ca should be used to neutralize exchangeable acidity and raise the Ca + Mg content. (CIAT)
