The effects of changes at the cropping and farming system levels on the cassava crop system are discussed. Analyses of the farming and cropping systems in the region of Kwango-Kwilu (Zaire) indicate the increased importance of cassava as a food and cash crop over the past 30 yr. Its special position in African shifting cultivation systems can be explained by its adaptability to nearly all types of crop sequences and intercropping arrangements and by its flexibility in total and seasonal labor inputs and in resource allocation. The var., planting material, cultural practices, yields, and introduction of 18 traditional and recently introduced crops in the region are summarized in table form. Bitter cassava var. are more common than sweet var.; surveys indicate approx. 46 var. recorded. The characteristics of 23 local var. commonly grown in Kwango-Kwilu are given. In general, the av. no. of var./field is 3.6; each var. is limited to 1 or 2 fields, and knowledge about var. is confined to women. To gain insight into the flexibility of cassava-based shifting cultivation, cultural practices and pests and diseases are discussed; when possible, data on cassava production in the pre-Independence period are included. The extent of the damage by pests and diseases to the cassava system seems to be related to a series of factors: soil fertility, planting dates, and presence of inoculum in or near the fields.
