(CIAT) spa
A cassava/sweet potato intercropping trial was carried out in Cruz das Almas (Bahia, Brazil) using a double-row planting system. A randomized block design was used. Double cassava rows were spaced at 2.0, 2.5, and 3.0 m, with 0.5, 0.6, and 0.7 m between component rows and between plants. Monocropped cassava, spaced at 2.0 x 0.6 x 0.6 m, was used as check. Sweet potato was planted between the double rows of cassava, spaced at 0.8 m between rows and 0.4 m between plants with 2, 3, and 4 rows at cassava double row spacings of 2.0, 2.5, and 3.0 m, resp. Cassava root yields were highest with the 2.0 x 0.6 x 0.6 m spacing; highest sweet potato yields were obtained at the greater spacings between double rows with closest inter- and intrarow spacings. Intercropping is highly efficient for food production since yield losses were not apparent when compared with pure crops. The amount of calories produced/ha in the intercropping treatments varied from 71.2 x 10(6) to 83.8 x 10(6); in the pure crop they were 50.4 x 10(6). Results of the economic analysis showed income return rates of approx. 10 for the cassava/sweet potato intercrop and of 6.4 for the pure crop. (CIAT) eng
