Estudios teoricos recientes indican que la discriminacion isotopica contra (13)CO2 durante la fotosintesis en C3 refleja la eficiencia en el uso de agua. Datos empiricos de varios cultivos y especies nativas apoyan las predicciones teoricas e indican que existe variacion sustancial en la eficiencia de uso de agua dentro y entre especies. Esta relacion entre la tasa de isotopo de carbono y la eficiencia de uso de agua se manifiesta en las observaciones de intercambio de gases a corto plazo y en las observaciones estacionales del cultivo a largo plazo. La tasa de isotopo de carbono y los patrones de clasificacion de los genotipos persisten entre anos y cuando las plantas se cultivan en diferentes habitats. Estudios mas recientes tambien indican que existe una correlacion significativa entre la productividad primaria (rendimiento) y la tasa de isotopo de carbono. Para evaluar si las tasas de isotopo de carbono pueden extenderse a la seleccion de frijol, se determinaron tasas foliares de isotopo de carbono y parametros de crecimiento del cultivo en 10 cv. de frijol en condiciones de estres hidrico, en 2 localidades de CIAT en Colombia. Recent theoretical studies have indicated that isotopic discrimination against (13)CO2 during photosynthesis in C3 reflects water-use efficiency. Empirical data for a number of crop and native species support theoretical predictions and indicate that there is substantial variation in water-use efficiency both within and between species. These relationship between carbon isotope ratio and water-use efficiency are observed in both short-term gas exchange observations as well as long-term seasonal crop observations. Carbon isotope ratio and genotype ranking patterns persist between years and when plants are grown in different habitats. More recent studies also indicate that there can be a significant correlation between primary productivity (yield) and carbon isotope ratio. To test whether carbon isotope ratios could be extended to screening in common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), leaf carbon isotope ratios and crop growth parameters were determined for ten bean cultivars grown under drought stress at two CIAT sites in Colombia. Leaf carbon isotope ratio showed considerable promise for determining the relative importance of water-use efficiency in different environments, offering physiologists and plant breeders a powerful new tool.
