The inoculation of beans with Rhizobium has not been a viable alternative to N fertilization in Latin America. Although Phaseolus vulgaris shows great variability in ability for symbiotic N fixation (some climbing var. fix more than 40 kg N/ha/growing cycle), most commercial var. do not respond to inoculation. This potential for N fixation in beans, as well as factors that affect this ability, is reviewed. Breeding strategies for increasing fixation rates in commercial var. are also considered. (AS-CIAT)
