Mejoramiento de frijoles volubles para sistemas de asociacion con maiz

Se examinan las metodologias y los objetivos de mejoramiento para frijol voluble en un campo de intensa competencia con maiz. Las var. de frijol voluble se pueden dividir en 3 categorias: tipo 4b, trepador vigoroso con mas de 2 m. de altura, poca ramificacion y carga de vainas en la parte alta de la planta; 4a, trepador de 1,5-2,0 m de altura con poca ramificacion y vainas repartidas a todo lo largo de la planta; tipo 3b, trepador facultativo con menos de 1,5 m, baja ramificacion y carga de vainas en la parte baja de la planta. El tipo 4b es el mejor para asociaciones con maiz alto; el tipo 4a para sistemas de asociacion con maiz y monocultivos, cuando hay un soporte fuerte y 3b, en caso de soporte bajo o pobre. El mejor sistema para selecciones individuales es el monocultivo. Se presenta una estrategia para seleccion de frijol voluble y los rendimientos de 10 var. de frijol voluble en monocultivo y en asociacion con 3 var. de maiz. (CIAT)
