(RA-CIAT) spa
In four trials in Costa Rica and Nicaragua, bean genotypes were planted sole cropped or between 30 days before and 10 days after the physiological maturity of six different maize genotypes. An interaction between cropping systems (sole cropping, advanced planting of beans, planting of beans at maize physiological maturity) and bean genotypes was found. Genotypes differed in their response to drought, to shading and to planting at maize maturity (which included climbing ability, response to residual fertility and response to the microenvironment under maize). In the experimental station trials in Costa Rica, bean yield loss to shading varied from 30 to 48 per cent and yield gain over sole cropping from planting at maize physiological maturity averaged 16 percent. There were differences between years due to diseases. In the production area in Nicaragua, loss to shading was lower and gain from planting at maize maturity was higher. Main stem development of all lines was stimulated in the presence of maize. (AS) eng
