Cassava is an important staple food crop in sub-Saharan Africa. It provides energy for more than half of region's population. In an attempt to improve the crop's yield potential to meet future requirements, scientists at IITA have been introducing genes from related wild species into cassava clones, as well as studying polyploidy as an avenue for improvement. This paper reports an important development, where two spontaneous somatic tetraploids have been identified through such attempts. eng
