Revista Brasileira de ZootecniaSummary: The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the effect of two stocking rates in natural pastures (SR - 0.85 and 0.60 CE/ha, CE: cow equivalent=400 kg) and types of suckling cntrol (SC: temporary weaning (TW) during I I days at the beginning of the breeding season, early weaning (EW) at middle of breading season and free suckling (C) until the time of conventional weaning (six-seven months). In 8/31/93, 137 pregnant heifers were allotted to the SR. In 11/30/93, the calves of each SR, one month old or more, were allotted to the SC. Calves of SR 0.85 CE/ha were lighter at 180 (148.9 kgvs. 158.7 kg) and at 365 days of life (166.4 kg vs. 176.2 kg). EW calves were lighter at 180 days of life than TW and C calves, without differences between these two. EW calves had higher daily liveweight gains until 365 days of life than TW and C calves, without effect of SR until the weaning on this characteristic.(RA)
