Cassava meal is a feed which, due to its nutritional characteristics, can be included in concentrates for dairy cattle. Therefore, this experiment was planned to study the effects of substituting sorghum by cassava meal in lactating cow rations. In this study, 12 cows were subjected to the following three treatments in a double-reversal trial (three periods of 14 days each): (1) 60 percent cassava meal; (2) 30 percent cassava meal + 30 percent sorghum; (3) 60 percent sorghum. That was for the concentrate while alfalfa was given ad libitum mantaining a 60:40 forage concentrate ratio. No differences were found among treatments for milk yield (17.22, 17.31 and 17.83 kg/d, respectively), milk fat, feed intake and live weight changes. The results obtained under these conditions indicate that sorghum can be partially or completely replaced (300 to 600 g/kg cassava meal in the concentrate) in rations for lactating cows without affecting their performance.
