(CIAT) spa
The relationships between 3 stages of evaluation (seedling, single row, and preliminary yield) for 3 important traits (root yield/plant, no. of roots/plant, and HI) were assessed to determine dependable selection criteria to be adopted in the initial stages of a breeding program. Sixteen biparental crosses were made involving CI 700, H 2304, CI 699, and CE 22 as females and M 4, CE 572, CI 13, and CE 380 as males. Both inter- and intra-group variances were determined. Correlations based on full-sib progeny means were higher than those of individual genotypes. Correlations between the single row and preliminary yield stages were higher than between the others. HI was the most reliable trait at the seedling stage, when progeny performance of crosses also proved more reliable than that of the genotypes. Genotypic selection may begin at the single-row stage.
