The results of a N fertilizer trial (0, 320, and 480 kg/ha/yr) conducted to measure the productivity of plantain-based intercropping systems (cassava, cocoyam, yam) in the rain forest zone of Nigeria are reported. For cassava, 20-cm stem cuttings of cv. TMX 30395 were planted at 1.0 x 1.0 m on mounds within the interrow (2.5 m) spaces. Plantain growth was suppressed when intercropped with cassava and fertilized with 480 kg/ha; sucker development was also highly suppressed, irrespective of fertilizer level. Of the intercrops, cassava yielded highest at all levels of fertilization. The application of 320 kg N/ha increased yields of all intercrops over the unfertilized intercops. Plantain intercropped with cassava or yam produced the highest total crop yields. Although the highest total yield was attained in the plantain + cassava intercrop (due to the higher yield of cassava), this system is not recommended due to the enhanced competitive ability of cassava, when fertilized, over plantain probably through shading during the establishment phase of plantain.
