Variations in some characteristics of cassava stems during storage prior to taking cuttings

Se tomaron estacas caulinares de plantas de 10 meses de edad de los cv. de yuca Rayong 1 y Rayong 3 y se mantuvieron en el campo abierto bajo la sombra de arboles desde abril 1 hasta junio 9 de 1984. El peso fresco de las estacas disminuyo mas rapidamente en Rayong 3 que en Rayong 1 durante el almacenamiento. La perdida critica en peso fresco fue de 12.5 por ciento del peso fresco inicial, la cual correspondio a una tasa de germinacion de 80 por ciento. El contenido de agua vario de 65.9 a 72.7 por ciento en Rayong 1 y de 53.1 a 63.6 por ciento en Rayong 3. La densidad volumetrica mostro una gran diferencia entre las 2 var., disminuyendo a 0.8 g/cm(3) a los 60 y 20 dias de almacenamiento en Rayong 1 y Rayong 3, resp. Poco despues del corte de los tallos, la respiracion aumento, luego disminuyo para aumentar nuevamente despues de los 30 dias; este fenomeno se observo especialmente en Rayong 3 debido a la produccion de yemas axilares. Los resultados sugieren que las estacas caulinares de Rayong 1 se pueden almacenar exitosamente durante por lo menos 30-40 dias mientras que el tiempo de almacenamiento para Rayong 3 no debe exceder los 20 dias. Stem cuttings were taken from 10-mo.-old plants of cassava cv. Rayong 1 and Rayong 3 and kept in the open air under the shade of trees from April 1 through June 9, 1984. Fresh wt. of cuttings decreased more rapidly in Rayong 3 than Rayong 1 during storage. The critical fresh wt. loss was 12.5 percent of the initial fresh wt. which corresponded to a germination rate of 80 percent. Water content ranged from 65.9 to 72.7 percent in Rayong 1 and from 53.1 to 63.6 percent in Rayong 3. The vol. density showed a great difference between the 2 var., decreasing to 0.8 g/cm(3) at 60 and 20 days of storage in Rayong 1 and Rayong 3, resp. Soon after stem cutting, respiration increased and then decreased, but increased again after 30 days; this was particularly notable in Rayong 3 due to the production of axillary buds. Results suggest that stem cuttings of Rayong 1 can be successfully stored for at least 30-40 days while storage time for Rayong 3 should not exceed 20 days. (CIAT)
