(RA (extracto)-CIAT)Summary: The effect of the difference between precipitation and potential evapotranspiration (P-PE) on seed yield of Phaseolus vulgaris var. Rico 23 was studied at Vicosa (Brazil) during 1961- 63. Final seed yield was correlated linearly with totals of (P-PE), accumulated over several periods of the crop cycle or over the whole cycle. The best period for yield estimate was 50-60 days after sowing. The increase in yield for each 1 mm increase in (P- PE) in each of 10-day-periods, varied throughout the crop cycle, the highest values being equal to 51.5 kg/ha in the period 20-70 days after planting. The yield threshold, in terms of (P-PE), was a negative value (-165 mm for the whole crop cycle) that decreased with increased duration of the period. (AS (extract))
