Durante la estacion de cultivo se aislo Alternaria alternata de hojas de muchas especies de malezas comunmente encontradas en o cerca de un campo de frijol blanco en Harrow Research Station (Ontario, Canada). El hongo tambien se encontro en plantas de frijol en todas las etapas del crecimiento. Las densidades de poblacion de A. alternata en las hojas de plantas de frijol cultivadas en semillas esterilizadas y no esterilizadas fueron similares. Las densidades de poblacion de A. alternata en las hojas de malezas y de frijol aumentaron a medida que avanzo la estacion de cultivo. El aumento en la poblacion de A. alternata se correlaciono con la senescencia natural de los tejidos foliares. Los azucares y las sustancias positivas a la ninhidrina en el lavado de las hojas aumentaron con la edad de la planta. During the growing season Alternaria alternata was isolated from leaves of many weed species commonly found in or around a white bean field at Harrow Research Station (Ontario, Canada). The fungus was also found on bean plants at all stages of growth. Population densities of A. alternata on the leaves of bean plants grown from surface-sterilized and nonsterilized seeds were similar. Population densities of A. alternata on the leaves of weeds and beans increased as the growing season advanced. The increase in the population of A. alternata was correlated with natural senescence of leaf tissues. Sugars and ninhydrin-positive substances in the leaf wash increased with plant age.
