Carioca, en condiciones controladas. vidrios (22 X 36 cm) separados por una plancha de madera de 3 mm de grosor. Se tomaron medidas y fotografias cada 24 horas durante 11 dias. Se determinaron 3 etapas: a) aparicion y desarrollo de la radicula, b) aparicion de la ramificacion secundaria en numero de 4, originada alrededor de una region de la radicula, y c) crecimiento del sistema de raices existentes y aparicion de nuevas ramificaciones. El crecimiento total del sistema radical durante el periodo de observacion fue de 140,1 cm de largo, el no. de raices secundarias y terciarias 62 y 27, respectivamente. La tasa media de crecimiento fue 0.48 cm/h.Summary: The initial morphology of the root system of bean var. Carioca was studied under controlled conditions, using a special gadget consisting of 2 pieces of glass (22 x 36 cm) separated by a 3-mm thick wooden board. Observations were made every 24 h for 11 days. Three stages were characterized: (a) appearance and development of the radicle; (b) appearance of secondary ramifications (4) around a region of (a); and (c) growth of the root system and appearance of new ramifications. Total root growth was 140.1 cm long; there were 62 and 27 secondary and tertiary roots, respectively. Mean growth rate was 0,48 cm/h. (AS)
