Information is collected on weed control research in bean cropping systems in different areas of Central America, to provide technicians with a series of practical recommendations regarding different management aspects of the crop. Producer possibilities and soil conditions must be kept in mind when conducting research on weed management systems. The main species of weeds observed in low dry and intermediate humid tropical conditions and the management systems used by farmers (manual-mechanical control (MMS) and MMC plus chemical control) are indicated. Technical and commercial names of herbicides and herbicide mixtures used to broaden the range of weeds controlled are indicated for beans in monoculture and in bean-maize associations. Information is also provided on application period, dose recommended, and type of weeds controlled, including the degree of susceptibility of 27 weed species to herbicides pendimethaline, linuron, vernolate, trifluraline, metholachlor, bentazone, fenoxaprop-ethyl, paraquat, glycophosphate, alachlor, EPTC plus R25788, and fluazifopbutyl. Several options are presented for integrated management programs, in which the association and/or relay production systems, cultural practices, and the rational use of some herbicides are fundamental to design and apply control methods that satisfy producer needs and help preserve the environment.
