In: Agronomy JournalSummary: Se cultivaron yuca, caupi y mani como monocultivos y en asociacion en un suelo Dystropept tipico en Santander de Quilichao, Colombia, en 1981 y 1982, para determinar la eficiencia de uso de la tierra, el rendimiento y los componentes del rendimiento en cada cultivo. Los rendimientos de la yuca se redujeron en 2.3-4.7 Mg/ha cuando se asocio con caupi o mani, con la excepcion del cultivo yuca-caupi de 1982. La reduccion en el rendimiento de la yuca por causa de la asociacion se asocio con la produccion de 1.5-3.9 menos raices de almacenamiento/planta, en comparacion con la yuca en monocultivo. Cuando se asocio con la yuca, los rendimientos de semilla del caupi se redujeron de 3195 a 2170 kg/ha en 1981 y de 2227 a 1328 kg/ha en 1982. En prom. para los 2 anos, el rendimiento de semilla de caupi se redujo de 2099 a 1293 kg/ha. Las disminuciones en el rendimiento del caupi y del mani por causa de la asociacion se relacionaron con la produccion de aprox. 3.5 menos vainas/planta. Aunque los rendimientos de los cultivos componentes se redujeron por causa de la asociacion, las asociaciones de yuca- caupi y de yuca-mani produjeron una tasa de eficiencia en el uso de la tierra de 15-35 por ciento mayor que los sistemas de monocultivos, en la estacion de cultivo de 11 meses. Esto se considera importante para los paises en desarrollo con escasa tierra cultivable per capita. Averaged across years, peanut seed yield was reduced from 2099 to 1293 kg/ha. Cowpea and peanut yield reductions due to intercropping were associated with the production of approx. 3.5 fewer pods/plant. Even though yields of component crops were reduced by intercropping, the cassava-cowpea and cassava-peanut intercropping systems resulted in 15-35 percent greater land use efficiency for the 11 mo. growing season than resulted from the sole cropping systems.
