Cooperative IBPGR and CIAT pilot project tests feasibility of in vitro conservation

Un banco piloto activo de germoplasma de yuca in vitro, establecido en la sede de CIAT, contiene actualmente 100 clones seleccionados de un total de 4500 accesiones del banco de genes de campo de CIAT. Se informa brevemente sobre los avances del proyecto en cuanto a seleccion de genotipos, muestreo de materiales, indizacion de enfermedades, cultivo y almacenamiento in vitro, frecuencia de seguimiento de subcultivos y fuente de meristemos, caracterizacion morfologica, electroforesis, banco asociado de genes de campo y base de datos. Se destaca el beneficio de usar los bancos de genes de campo in vitro en los viajes de recoleccion de germoplasma. A pilot in vitro active cassava germplasm bank, established at CIAT headquarters, currently contains 100 clones selected from a total of 4500 accessions in CIAT's field gene bank. Project progress regarding the selection of genotypes, sampling of material, disease indexing, in vitro culture and storage, monitoring subculture frequency and source of meristems, morphological characterization, electrophoresis, the associated field gene bank, and the database are briefly reported. The beneficial use of field in vitro gene banks in germplasm collecting missions is highlighted. (CIAT)
