La discriminacion por isotopo de carbono (delta) provee una medida integrada de la relacion de las concentraciones intercelulares y ambientales de CO2 en plantas con rutas fotosinteticas C3. Ambos parametros se refieren al proceso de intercambio gaseoso dentro de la hoja. Se revisan las variaciones en los valores delta para frijol y Agropyron desertorum. Existe sustancial variacion genetica intraespecifica en delta; los valores delta exhiben plasticidad fenotipica, pero parece existir estabilidad entre los estadios de desarrollo, habitats y estaciones. Los valores delta parecen estar correlacionados con la eficiencia de transpiracion, conductancia foliar de vapor de agua y produccion de materia seca a traves de los genotipos examinados para ambas especies. Carbon isotope discrimination (delta) provides an integrated measure of the ratio of intercellular to ambient CO2 concentrations in C3 photosynthetic pathway plants. Both of these parameters are related to gas exchange processes within leaves. Variations in the delta values for common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) and a range grass (Agropyron desertorum) are reviewed. There appears to be substantial intraspecific genetic variation in delta; delta values exhibit phenotypic plasticity, but appear to be stable across developmental stages, habitats, and seasons. The delta values appear to be correlated with transpiration efficiency, leaf conductance to water vapor, and dry matter production across the range of genotypes examined for both species.
