(RA-CIAT); The voluntary intake and chemical composition of hay and silage made of the aerial part of 1-yr-old cassava cv. IAC 12- 829 were evaluated at the Escola Superior de Agricultura de Lavras (Minas Gerais, Brazil) during 1982-83. Four treatments were studied, namely, T1, hay of the whole aerial part; T2, silage of the whole aerial part; T3, hay of the upper third of the whole aerial part; and T4, silage of the upper third of the aerial part. The chemical composition of multiple samples offered to sheep was determined using the following parameters: DM, CP, crude fiber, soluble carbohydrates, Ca, P, GE, and pH. Twenty wethers were kept for 21 days in individual metabolic cages in order to estimate voluntary intake using a randomized block design with 5 replications and 4 treatments. DM voluntary intake, digestible DM, digestible protein, and digestible energy were determined. Better quality was achieved, both with silage or hay, by using the upper third of the aerial part. Voluntary intake of protein was higher with silage. (AS) ER -
