N2  - Desde hace mucho, la región amazónica ha sido considerada tierra de mitos y leyendas. Hoy día aún conserva la imagen de ser un manto verde homogéneo que cubre vastas áreas de la superficie terrestre, pero detrás de esta imagen hay una diversidad geológica y natural tan impresionante y variada, que se puede afirmar que no existe uno sino muchos ‘Amazonas’ representados en una variedad de paisajes únicos en el mundo. La cuenca consta de diversas formaciones geológicas. Su diversidad de suelos incluye sedimentos holocénicos —los más jóvenes de menos de 10,000 años— encontrados en áreas inundables como las del sur de Brasil. Los suelos más antiguos se encuentran en el altiplano Guyanés, una formación geológica que forma parte del Escudo Guyanés, que se extiende debajo de seis países. Esas áreas antiguas de sedimentos arcillosos y rocas precámbricas han sufrido un desgaste en los últimos 1,700 millones de años hasta llegar a una altura de solo unos 700 metros; The Amazon has long been regarded as a land of myths and wonder. Indeed, the whole region represents a variety of landscapes that is unique in the world. The entire basin encompasses numerous geological formations. Its diverse soils include Holocene sediments— the youngest at less than 10,000 years old—found in flood-prone areas such as those of southern Brazil. The oldest soils are found in the Guiana Highlands, a geological formation that is part of the Guiana Shield, itself underlying six countries. These ancient areas of clayish sediments and pre-Cambrian rocks have been worn down over 1700 million years to a height of only about 700 m
