In: In: National Root Crops Improvement Programme. (CIAT)Summary: The results of an on-farm survey conducted in the important cassava and sweet potato growing areas of Eastern Region of Uganda (counties of Serere, Soroti, Kumi, Pallisa, Tororo, and West Budama) are reported. Two main recommendation domains (cattle owners and nonowners and farmers in fertile and less fertile areas) were identified and surveyed. Aspects such as land holding, sources and use of farm power, farm and farmer characteristics (climate, soils, socioeconomic aspects, land tenure, market, and credit facilities), farming systems, and production constraints are described. Cassava was found to be the priority crop and the preferred food in the area surveyed. Cassava performance is described and the cropping calendar in the region is given. Cassava var. planted are listed, the most widespread being Ebwanateraka. Data is provided on the availability of land and labor for cassava and other crops, as well as on sources of family income; cassava is considered the most important by 60 percent of the farmers surveyed. Cultural practices and production methods of cassava are briefly described. Production constraints identified include overdependence on 1 var., diseases and pests (CBB, CAMD, Gloeosporium manihotis, Mononychellus tanajoa), soil fertility, weeds, the lack of long-term var. and adequate marketing channels.
